Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then located multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
An important official commented the incident rendered him speechless and required to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
