Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
