RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
