European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
